How do you place community lots on the Sims 3? For some reason it wont let me place community lots on edit a town mode. When I select 'place community lot' all empty lot icons disappear and there are no available spots to place it in.

- For some reason, I am recently unable to place lots in my town when I go into edit town mode. I try to place a lot and it tells me, 'Cannot place on unroutable terraine' or 'Cannot place on roads' When I'm not trying to place it on roads or unroutable terrain. I place it right to the edge of the road and I won't let me place it.
- Getting lots to line up with a road. You can turn the grid on, place the road, then place the lot. With the grid on, the road and lot will snap into place perfectly.
- 3- After your game is loaded through CAW, pick your lot from the library and place it, as you would in a normal game. Then save your changes and exit the game; 4- CAW will at this point be updated with your lot placed in it. Click on your lot and you will see lots of information on it, including the type of lot.

- edited July 2017Save the first school lot down to the bin. Bulldoze the first school and re-place the lot. Place the second school either by using a lot you have saved down to the bin or start with a fresh lot and place the building from Build/Buy Community Objects (then landscape to taste, add a playground, parking lot..it's more work that way of course). All without leaving Edit Town.
The reason both schools have to be off the map at the same time is that otherwise the game will ignore the second one. It's okay to bulldoze a community lot when sims are on it, they will just be transported home. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get this right.
By EA standard, sim kids and teens will re-register at the school that is closest to their home lot. All scholastic performance across town will be reset to 0 (Grade C). It may take a couple of sim days of play for things to sort themselves out. NRaas MasterController with the MC Cheats module can be used to re-establish non-zero school performance but you have to know how well kids were doing or failing to do this much like as with job performance. Sims in the Education career (teachers) will lose their jobs; those and their job performance can be reset with MC as well.
If you want the schools to be restricted in some way, such as one elementary and one high school, or one for males and one for females, one for rich kids, one for poor, etc., then NRaas StoryProgression's Lot Options and castes must be used together with the NRaas GoHere mod.

Thank you, @igazor. This simplifies things a lot for me. I appreciate that.
Update: UGH..blasted silly sims. They ALL went to the NEW ONE!!! And I put both schools down at the same time. How do you specify caste? Is there a caste for child so that I can make one an elementary school and the other a secondary school? I'm installing the GoHere mod right now.
Nikkei_Simmer's Sims 3 Blog - For more Sims 3 stories.. - edited July 2017When I finally got around to doing this I was happy to reset their school grades back to C as most of my sims were at F by then and I was worried about a visit from the social worker.
I looked through the various schools available in my library as there are a lot there. That way I managed to get a variety of different looking schools in town.
EDIT: I also installed a mod to give me control over scolding. I found when kids couldn't get into school they'd be scolded and grounded for skipping school and then they'd have to sneak out to try to go to school the next day.
The most extreme case of this was when I had Gobias Koffi working at the school. I was so happy when I finally managed to get one of his offspring in that game to actually get into school. Only to see Gobias be the perfect parent. He dragged the child out of school to scold him for skipping school and then gave him time out while Gobias went back inside to work. The child stood outside the school all day and then got scolded and grounded again for skipping school that day.

This incident was the one that finally convinced me to get the mod to control scolding and to add the extra schools.

If you want a High School, on the lot NRaas > SP > Lot Options > Caste Required> Teenagers
..plus GoHere
You can make a Children caste if you really want to. But it's important to not use two Requires or else no one would be able to work in the Education career since they wouldn't be Children or Teens.
Even with all of this, sometimes it take a couple of tries and/or a couple of sim days for sims to wind up at the 'correct' school.

Sims 3 Placing Lots Cheat
- edited July 2014In addition to having an empty lot already on the map that is at least the size of the one you are trying to place, the commercial lot types have to match. You cannot, for example, place a pre-made Arcade (ie, bowling alley) onto an empty lot typed as a Dance Club.
Does that help or have you already made sure that the commercial lot types match?

Did that when I googled the issue before, but I've never had to make sure the lot type matched; just that the lot was the correct size.
But, no, changing the lot type doesn't work. - edited July 2014Try building on the lot (just a couple walls), exiting to edit town, and bulldozing the lot once. Then see if you can place your lot down.0
- wow i got the same problem , what do i do now how to i place them on the lot, not quite shure what was the category of the lot! help what i do
- I know this is an old thread, but I'm responding to @DJMIXMASTER 's post from a few days ago.
First, check the lot is genuinely recognised by the game as empty: change it to a residential lot, and if the icon you get looks like a house then you need to use the bulldoze tool on it. If the icon looks like an blank rhombus then it's already empty.
Next, change the lot back to a community. If you still can't place the build, try changing the zoning of the lot to 'Visitors Allowed' or 'No Visitors Allowed'. You'd think you'd have to change it to match whatever your build is zoned as, but for some reason that doesn't work for me: it has to be VA or NVA.
The lot type should change to the appropriate zoning (dive bar, park, whatever) automatically when you place your build. If it doesn't, you can do that yourself after placing.
Best of luck. You can still find me on my old My page (http://mypage.thesims3.com/mypage/GreenCats), and see more of my game-play pictures and CC-free uploads at gcsims.com - Sometimes what I've seen is that homeless NPCs set up camp on empty lots and that's why they get the house icon. This also can occur when something has spawned there like a rock or minor pet.
Save your game, then bulldoze as Greencats suggests and then you should be able to place your lot. (I like to save because occasionally I miscalculate and there goes the entire lot, which you can't always replace if the routing goes all wonky). The Sims
Where are we going, and why am I in this hand basket?! - What I do to avoid losing a lot that may need bulldozing before I can place anything on it is to select the lot in Edit Town and choose 'build.' Once I'm there, I select the hammer tool, and drag it over the entire lot, from one corner to the diagonally opposite corner. If there is anything hidden there, you'll see the flash of light when it's deleted.1

- I just had the same problem in the most recent CAW world I made. I had a vacant 64x64 community lot, and couldn't place anything on it. I even went into build mode and dragged the hammer tool over the entire world, but there was no flash of light indicating that something had been deleted. So I used the wall tool the make a room, went back into Edit Town, and bulldozed the lot. That took care of the issue, and I was able to place a lot there. This is the first time dragging the hammer tool over a lot didn't work for me.1
